In the Aeolians the month matters more than the island. What changes is not the scenery, but how often the sea lets you go out. Here is what the sea is like month by month, so you can pick your dates knowing what you are in for.
In short: the best time for a day on the water runs from June to September, with the calmest sea in July and August: in these two months rough days are genuinely rare. In May the sea is still good but the mistral, the west wind, can pick up, and from November to February the windows of fine weather thin out a lot.
The notes below capture how the sea behaves at Lipari month by month, based on thirty years of data. They are not a forecast for your exact day, but the best way to pick the period and know what to expect when you book.
The shorter the bar, the calmer the sea tends to be. In light blue, the months when rough days are rarest: June, July, August and September.
In July the sea is almost always calm: the typical wind is below 9 knots and genuinely rough days number fewer than one a month. In December, the windiest period, there are on average eight rough days out of thirty.
From June to September the sea in the Aeolians is at its best for a day on the water. July and August are the calmest of all: anyone booking in this window gets out almost every time, and even the crossings to the furthest islands become reasonable for those with little experience. June and September stay calm, with the bonus of fewer boats around and less crowding in the coves.
April and May are transition months. The sea settles compared with winter, but spring in the Aeolians is the season of the mistral, the west wind that dominates here for most of the year. The odd rough day still turns up: they are few, but when the mistral picks up it churns the sea on the exposed side just as everything else looks perfect. In these months the advice is simple: check the forecast a couple of days ahead and keep a plan B toward the sheltered coves.
October is still navigable and not far off May: anyone willing to accept a little uncertainty finds the sea often good and prices dropping. From November onward the season changes pace, the windows of fine weather thin out, and a day on the water becomes occasional.
From December to February the sea at Lipari is regularly rough, peaking in December. This is not the boat season: it is the time you plan next year's trip.
A simple rule of thumb. In the warmest months (June, July, August, September) a day on the water is almost always doable. In May and October you still go out, checking the forecast and keeping a sheltered route in mind. From November to March the window is narrow and each outing has to be judged day by day.
These values are for Lipari: on the islands more exposed to the north, such as Panarea and Stromboli, the sea tends to be a little rougher in the same months.
Beyond the sea, the island keeps a rhythm of traditions that repeats season after season. In these periods expect more movement ashore and in the busier coves.
