Which Aeolian island should you visit? A guide to choosing

In short: if it is your first time or you are travelling with children, base yourself on Lipari, the best-connected and most convenient island. If you are after quiet, choose Salina, the greenest, or Filicudi and Alicudi, the wildest. For glamour and clear water, aim for Panarea. If your dream is the burning volcano, the destination is Stromboli, always with a skipper.

If it is your first time

Lipari

It is the best-connected harbour in the archipelago and the most convenient island to base yourself on. More operators, more choice, clearer prices: guided tours toward Vulcano and Panarea leave constantly, and skippered boats are easy to arrange.

The coves are minutes away and the harbour is a good fallback if the weather changes. The right choice for anyone visiting the Aeolians by boat for the first time, or travelling with children who want short crossings.

If you are after quiet

Salina, Filicudi and Alicudi

Salina is the greenest of the Aeolians, with its twin volcanoes and the beach of Pollara set inside a crater open to the sea: a slow pace, little coves you cannot see from the road.

Filicudi and Alicudi are the most distant and wildest, where time genuinely slows. Filicudi's Grotta del Bue Marino can only be reached by boat. The islands for staying away from the crowd.

If you want glamour

Panarea

The smallest and most glamorous, ringed by the islets of Lisca Bianca and Basiluzzo. Clear water, anchorages you can only enjoy from a boat and an exclusive atmosphere, by evening as by day.

Here boats are fewer and more sought after, so prices climb and the choice narrows: it is the island for those after the view and the right scene, with a budget to match. Not the cheap first outing.

If you want the volcano

Stromboli

The always-active volcano of the archipelago. After dark, from the sea, you watch the Sciara del Fuoco: the slope the explosions run down, the image that those who come back to the Aeolians go looking for on purpose.

You do not rent this one to drive yourself: the evening trip is done with a skipper, on a fitted-out boat and keeping the distances set by ordinance. It is the signature experience of the trip, not a first outing in a dinghy.

Once you have chosen the island, the month is left. In the Aeolians the period matters more than the destination: in July and August the sea is almost always calm, while in May and October you need to keep an eye on the wind.
