The same day takes a different shape depending on when you cast off. These are the best boat experiences in the Aeolian Islands: a day among the coves, sunset under Stromboli, snorkelling in waters you cannot see from the mainland, and a tour of the Odyssey filming locations.

A day among the coves

Seven to eight hours at sea to link what stays separate from land. From Lipari to green Salina, with a stop at Pollara and the small coves at Punta Lingua; heading west you skirt the obsidian flows all the way to Vulcano.

You choose the cove for a swim at the last minute, based on the day's wind rather than the map. You can drive yourself, on your own, with a dinghy within the limits that need no licence, or have a skipper on board who has read the Aeolian wind for years: you cover longer stretches and never think about the anchor.

Who it's for: anyone who wants the classic format and to link more than one island in a day, from first-timers to returning visitors.

Sunset and Stromboli by night

You cast off in the afternoon and stay offshore until dark, in front of the Sciara del Fuoco: the flow that runs down from Stromboli's cone to the sea, visible only from the water and only once the light fades.

First the sunset on the west side, then the wait, engine off, for the bursts that light up at intervals. It is an outing you cannot improvise: it almost always needs a skipper, a boat equipped to sail after dark, and respect for the distances set in front of the Sciara. You cannot reach Stromboli on your own with a dinghy that needs no licence.

Who it's for: anyone looking for the signature outing of the holiday: couples and those returning to the Aeolians to see one thing, done well.

A skippered boat from Milazzo averages between about 450 and 650 euro a day. The shared evening tour toward Stromboli starts lower, per person. Average market prices, they vary by season and availability.

Coves and snorkelling in clear water

Half a day, anchor and mask. Caves, sea stacks and shallow seabeds on the south side of Vulcano, the rocks around Panarea, the protected waters of the marine reserve. These are places that, from land, simply do not exist.

You reach them only by sea, and often you reach them alone. It is the most accessible format for first-time renters: the legs are short, a dinghy with no licence is more than enough, and you build the day around the seabeds rather than the distance covered. Inside the reserve you respect the protected zones and the mooring buoys, where there are any.

Who it's for: anyone with children on board, or wanting a short, safe first outing, with no long stretches in open water.

A dinghy with no licence at Lipari averages between about 140 and 300 euro a day for the boat. Average market prices, they vary by season and availability.

You set off from Lipari or Vulcano, twenty minutes from the first coves, or from the more distant Filicudi and Alicudi.

In the footsteps of Odyssey

In April 2025 Christopher Nolan brought his Odyssey to the Aeolians, choosing for the island of the god of winds the archipelago that takes its name from Aeolus. The shoot touched Lipari, Vulcano and Panarea.

There is one thing the film guides do not say: those places cannot be visited on foot. The Grotta del Cavallo, on Vulcano, opens only toward the sea. Basiluzzo is an uninhabited islet in a reserve off Panarea, and you approach it without landing. Pietra del Bagno is a rock in open water off Lipari. Of all the Aeolian locations, the only one you can reach on foot is the Castle of Lipari. For the rest you need a boat, and you need calm sea: you enter the cave only when the swell allows it.

Who it's for: anyone who came to the Aeolians after watching the film, and wants a day built around the right places instead of a standard itinerary.
